Divisor (DIM Factor)
The number used to convert volume into dimensional weight.
Definition
The divisor (also called DIM factor, volumetric factor, or dimensional factor) is the number used in the dimensional weight calculation. You divide the package volume by this divisor to get the dimensional weight. Different carriers use different divisors: express services typically use 5000 cm³/kg (or 139 in³/lb), while economy services often use 6000 cm³/kg (or 166 in³/lb). A lower divisor means higher dimensional weight and potentially higher costs.
Why It Matters
The divisor directly affects your shipping cost for volumetric shipments. Carriers with a lower divisor charge more for the same package size. When comparing carriers, always consider the divisor—a carrier with lower per-kg rates might end up costing more if their divisor is also lower.
Example
A 40,000 cm³ package has a dimensional weight of 8 kg with a 5000 divisor, but only 6.67 kg with a 6000 divisor. The 5000 divisor results in higher chargeable weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do divisors vary between carriers?
Carriers set divisors based on their business model, aircraft/vehicle capacity, and competitive positioning. Express services with premium pricing typically use lower divisors (5000), while economy services use higher divisors (6000 or more).
