Data Sources
Transparency matters. This page outlines the primary sources and methodologies used in DutyGlobal's calculators and reference content.
Our goal is to provide structured, best-effort estimates based on publicly available information and widely accepted calculation standards.
Tariff and Duty Rates
Duty rates used in the Landed Cost Calculator are derived from official government tariff schedules and customs guidance published by national customs authorities.
These typically include:
- Harmonised System (HS) code–based tariff schedules
- Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) duty rates
- Preferential rates under applicable trade agreements
Rates are reviewed periodically and updated when changes are identified through official publications or regulatory updates.
Because tariff classifications and trade agreements vary by country and product, users should confirm final rates with the relevant customs authority or licensed customs broker.
VAT, GST, and Sales Tax
Tax rates incorporated into our calculations are sourced from official revenue authority publications and government guidance.
Where applicable, we include:
- Standard VAT or GST rates
- Reduced or zero-rated categories (where broadly applicable)
- General application rules for import VAT/GST
Tax regulations may change following fiscal updates or budget announcements. Always verify current rates and application rules with the relevant tax authority in your jurisdiction.
Carrier Dimensional Divisors
Dimensional weight divisors used in the Dimensional Weight Calculator and Chargeable Weight Calculator are based on published carrier documentation and rate cards from major international carriers (e.g. DHL, FedEx, UPS, TNT, Aramex).
Important considerations:
- Divisors may vary by service level
- Contracted rates may differ from public rate cards
- Regional variations may apply
DutyGlobal uses commonly published standard divisors unless otherwise specified.
Volume and CBM Calculations
The CBM Calculator uses standard geometric volume formulas:
Length × Width × Height (in metres) = Cubic Metres (CBM)
No external tariff or regulatory data is required for volume calculations. Accuracy depends solely on the dimensional inputs provided by the user.
Data Review and Updates
DutyGlobal reviews tariff rates, tax rules, and carrier policies on a periodic basis.
However:
- Tariff schedules may change without notice
- Carrier policies and dimensional divisors may be updated
- Regulatory interpretations may vary
We make reasonable efforts to maintain current data but do not guarantee that every data point reflects the most recent regulatory change at all times.
Best-Effort Estimates
All calculations are provided on a best-effort basis for planning and budgeting purposes.
Final charges may differ due to:
- Customs reclassification
- Adjusted declared values
- Currency reference rate differences
- Carrier surcharges or handling fees
Always confirm final amounts with your customs broker, freight forwarder, or carrier before shipment.
Report a Data Issue
If you believe a duty rate, tax rule, carrier divisor, or other data point is outdated or incorrect, please contact us at support@dutyglobal.com
When possible, include:
- The affected country or route
- The specific value in question
- A link to the official source
We review all reported issues and update our data where necessary.
